Privacy and data

Reading GDI needs no account. Nothing you read is tied to you.

Accounts

An account (for comments and saved quotes) is a phone number and a display name. We text the number a code to sign you in, keep it only for that, never show it, and never message it unasked. Accounts made before phone sign-in have an email address and a password instead: we keep the email to let you sign in, never show it, and send no mail unless you ask us to. Delete the account and its comments and number go with it.

What we measure

We count page views and the columns people open with PostHog, through our own address. Your IP address is discarded before anything is stored, nothing is recorded or replayed, and no advertising networks are involved. Blocking it breaks nothing.

Where the data comes from

Campaign finance comes from the Federal Election Commission's bulk filings. Legislation, votes and members come from Congress.gov and the unitedstates project. Biographies and portraits come from Wikipedia and Wikidata. Figures are recomputed from those sources; where we attribute money across committees, the page says how.

FEC contributor data may not be used to solicit contributions or for commercial purposes. We publish it for the public record only.
